Ethan Parker had spent his life building a stable home for his son, Caleb. At 42, he was content—divorced, focused on work, and proud of the young man Caleb was becoming. His life was predictable, steady. Until Caleb brought his best friend, Jordan, home for the summer.

Jordan was 24, charming, and effortlessly beautiful, with a sharp wit and a smile that made Ethan’s heart stutter. He had known Jordan for years, but something about him now—more mature, more confident—unsettled Ethan in ways he wasn’t ready to admit.

It started innocently. Late-night conversations in the kitchen while Caleb slept. A shared bottle of wine. Laughter that lingered too long, gazes that held a little too much meaning. Ethan told himself it was nothing. He was imagining things. Jordan was young, off-limits, his son’s best friend.

But Jordan made it hard to ignore. The way he touched Ethan’s arm when they spoke, how his eyes lingered, the quiet moments when it felt like something unsaid hung in the air between them.

One evening, while Caleb was out with friends, Ethan found Jordan on the back porch, staring at the night sky. He joined him, and they talked—about life, love, regrets.

Then, Jordan asked, "Have you ever wanted something you knew you shouldn’t?"

Ethan swallowed hard, his pulse quickening. "Yes," he admitted, barely above a whisper.

Jordan turned to face him. "Me too."

"I don’t want to make things complicated," Ethan murmured.

Jordan smiled, soft and understanding. "Maybe they already are."
